Today I want to reveal a secret about a well-known herb.
It’s a yummy spice that people associate with desserts and sweets, because of it’s warming and mouth-watering taste…. I’m talking about cinnamon!
But cinnamon is so much more than a key ingredient for holiday festivities — it’s also potent medicine.
Cinnamon has long been used as a cardiotonic, which means it’s good for your heart! Studies show that it strengthens heart tissue and helps to normalize both blood pressure and blood sugar. This makes cinnamon a popular preventative supplement for folks at risk of becoming diabetic.
Cinnamon is also a digestive herb. It’s warming nature helps your body to process fats and get stagnant lower bowels moving again. But one of cinnamon’s main supportive properties is its astringency. This potent herb has the ability to tighten up internal tissues, making cinnamon a great herbal ally for leaky gut and ulcers.
In addition to its other health benefits, cinnamon is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral — which is great for your mouth, your gums, and your teeth. It’s a natural-born “bad-breath killer.”
Here is one of my favorite ways to incorporate cinnamon into my oral health routine: a simple cinnamon tooth powder recipe!
Cinnamon Tooth Powder
*Makes about 1 month of powder
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons bentonite clay
- 4 tablespoons calcium powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
- 1 tablespoon activated charcoal
Instructions:
- Ensure that everything is very finely ground (use herb grinder if necessary).
- Mix ingredients thoroughly.
- Store in an airtight jar.
How to Use:
- Wet your toothbrush.
- Dip into the powder.
- Brush as usual.
*You can use either Cassia or Verum Cinnamons in this recipe. Cassia, however, contains more essential oils and other components that make it a bit ‘stronger.’
